The way building services SKILLcards are awarded to experienced workers is set to change at the end of 2024 when cards currently secured under ‘industry accreditation’ (IA) or employer endorsement will no longer be accepted as proof of competence.This follows the requirement set out by the Construction Leadership Council that only workers with nationally recognised qualifications (usually SVQs or NVQs) will be eligible for cards – and is in line with broader government policy on how skilled workers must prove their competence in the future.

Construction Skills Certification Scheme (CSCS) Chief Executive Graham Wren is to retire next month.

Over the last 10 years Graham has overseen some of the most pivotal developments in the card scheme’s history, most notably the placing of recognised qualifications at the heart of every card application, resulting in the raising of standards and safety across the UK construction industry.

CSCS Smart Check app updated

Having already improved card checking procedures at site gates, the CSCS Smart Check app has been updated to include a number of additional card schemes that display the CSCS logo and an improved process for reporting cards that may have been obtained fraudulently.

Developed by the 38 schemes displaying the CSCS logo and launched in April 2022, CSCS Smart Check allows those responsible for checking cards to verify over two million cards using a single app on their smartphone or tablet.
